AFL decimal odds: stake, return and implied percentage

Use decimal quotes to compare matched AFL selections and calculate gross return separately from profit.

Calculate the return

Decimal odds multiply the stake to give the gross return on a winning bet, including the original stake. At 1.90, a $100 winning stake returns $190 and earns $90 profit. At 1.95 on the identical AFL selection and line, the same stake returns $195 and earns $95 profit.

Translate a quote carefully

The implied percentage from a decimal quote is 1 divided by the odds. A 1.90 price implies 52.63% when rounded; 1.95 implies 51.28%. These percentages include the bookmaker's pricing margin when considered with the other side of its market. They are break-even references for a bet at that quote, not independent forecasts of a club's chance.

Preserve what you are buying

Compare the same fixture, club, market, period and signed line before the arithmetic. A 1.95 head-to-head quote cannot be used as the improved price for a +8.5 line bet. Also check the current source price: the board's captured quote may no longer be offered.

Worked example

Illustration: $100 at 1.90 returns $190 gross; $100 at 1.95 returns $195 gross. The $5 gain applies only if both quotes settle the same winning selection and line.

Illustrative numbers for explaining the calculation. They are not current bookmaker quotes.

Sources and method

Prices and stake are hypothetical. Gross return equals stake × decimal odds; implied percentage equals 1/decimal odds. No true win probability is estimated.
